Poem ~ “New Kite” ~ by Allard

NEW KITE
for Bette, my mother, upon her passing
Chrysalid sack splits open;
butterfly ecloses.* Wings unfurl,
fill, stiffen. At launch,
a flutter, flap. She lifts,
stalls, recovers; then climbs,
catches a current, and floats
in beauty, grace, and joy.
* (Please Note ~ Ecloses is a verb that means, butterfly emerging from chrysalis.)

Musing . . . about Being

“Where’s Lambie?! She’s GONE,” wailed my 3-year-old daughter as I strapped her into her car seat. And, indeed, she was right ~ we had left Lambie behind, somewhere on the grounds of the amusement park. I silently chastised myself ~

Musing . . . about keeping our perspective

Reading Mushiba’s most recent article about the interchange between light and dark, and the thought provoking postings that followed it, reminded me of a joke I heard from some exceptionally loving, hard working, often tested, and long suffering Sisters ~

Musing. . . about the Right Conditions

I’ve always loved to bake. These days, I do it less often than I used to ~ my weight and cholesterol count have crept up a bit, and I have less time. However, the kids enjoy the process, and we all enjoy the product, so we pull out the flour, sugar, butter and eggs whenever […]

Musing . . . about Liberation

Of late, one of the groups to which I belong has been facing some painful challenges. It came to light that our leader has been engaged in behavior that most of us find to be in poor judgement, at best, and even unethical. The behavior sparked an awkward and hurtful investigation that yielded inconclusive results.

Musing . . . about Buoyancy

This piece has been at least 42 years in the making ~ perhaps more like 42 lifetimes. Its topic is one I find difficult and complex, still hard to write about, and Terribly Significant on my life’s path. It’s about my mother ~ or, rather, what I’ve learned recently through our relationship.

Musing . . . about Vacation ~ Part Two

My first article was about discovering that I can live my regular life in a vacation mindset ~ “Now that I’ve figured this out, life will feel relatively carefree,” I thought to myself ~ naively ~ when I went to bed that night.

Musing . . . about Vacation

The other day one of my friends asked about my vacation plans. She was surprised when I said that I didn’t have any. I used to be an avid traveler ~ I’d go anywhere, anytime, for pretty much any reason. My husband and I have taken numerous trips together and had loads of fun.
