Kids Taking the Lead

I decided that this leadership stuff can be quite heavy, important and Serious so I’m going to attempt to shed some Lightheartedness onto the topic. This article is full of quotes from some other famous people ~ my kids!

Children definitely have a different view of the world than adults and, of course, we can learn from them. The quotes below come from inquistive minds that are still working with limited vocabularies (my sons, Andrew age 7 and, Eric age 6) but I think their points come across quite well.

Describing your Senses

How does one six year old describe what he is experiencing through his senses? Here are some examples ~

“My tongue got dizzy.”

“My brain is in charge of me.”

On matters of sleep ~

“My eyes fell asleep.”

“The key comes very late to lock my eyes.”

Yup, sometimes I have that problem too.

“Sometimes I want to finish my dreams.”

Wired

The other night, Andrew was jumping on our bed and could not settle down. It was some time before he began to slow down. As I was sitting there wondering what happened, Eric looked right at me and said

“He had a little something.”

As it turned out, that little something was my now raided supply of Hershey chocolate bars. Andrew had found the stash and climbed up to it.

Anything for a Guest

Eric had a friend come over for a visit. When it came time for a refreshment, Eric insisted that He be the one to prepare a cup of chocolate milk for his guest. As he walked it over toward him, Eric realized that the cup was a bit full and some of the chocolate milk might get spilled. So being the gracious host, he drank about a quarter of it and then brought it over and handed it to his guest without spilling a drop.

Barefoot in Boston

Sometimes we have to do something we don’t like and one day Andrew had to take the day and go into Boston to have some tests that the pediatrician had set up for him. In his frustration at having to go, he issued this threat ~

“If I have to go to Boston, then I’m going barefoot!”

Knights and Fights

Once per week, my wife and I play a simple role playing game with Eric and Andrew that has come to be known as the Magic Dungeon. Andrew plays a knight named Aragorn who faces the dark denizens of a dungeon but, at times loses his nerve. A couple of his sayings ~

“When I swung with my sword and missed, I was actually busy blocking and not really swinging.”

“All knights need pacifiers.”

Harry the Zombie

I bought a full sized Halloween prop named Harry who laughs while he removes his head with his hands and puts it back on ~ quite an experience for Eric and Andrew, who react differently to Harry (Eric inspects him, while Andrew ducks out of the room when Harry begins his routine) ~

“Andrew, he’s not real ~ he’s a machine. I checked under his clothes and he doesn’t even have skin there.”

“No Eric, he’s not a machine ~ he’s a spirit.”

So, what is Harry really?

From bedtime with love

A few nights ago, I went up after the kids were in bed to check on them. Andrew opened his eyes groggily and smiled at me and said ~

“Oh, I must be dreaming.”

It was a very sweet thing to say and then he gave me a big hug. Communicating the truth to another…

I hope this article brought a smile to your face. As for me, I’m still wrestling with the question of whether he is a spirit or a machine…
